Placenta encapsulation information

What is placenta encapsulation?

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the placenta after birth by cleaning, dehydrating, and grinding it into powder, then placing it into capsules for the birthing person to take postpartum.

Is doing something with the placenta a culture-specific custom?

The placenta is revered in many cultures and thanked for its role in supporting and protecting the child through pregnancy. In some cultures, the placenta is buried in the infant’s birthplace to anchor the child to their home. In others, the placenta is placed at the base of a tree and watched to see which animal comes to eat it. The animal is then viewed as connected to the child for life, providing it with wisdom and power. Placentas are often consumed and even used in art.

Why do people consume the placenta?

Many believe the placenta contains nutrients and hormones that may help with:

  • Supporting mood balance

  • Replenishing iron

  • Increasing energy

  • Enhancing milk supply

  • Promoting postpartum healing

  • Note: Benefits are based on anecdotal reports and traditional use, not FDA-approved.

Is it safe?

I follow strict safety protocols based on current best practices, including:

  • Food-grade equipment

  • Proper sanitization procedures

  • Safe transport and storage guidelines

  • Encapsulation within a 48-hour window (or freezing when necessary)

Your safety is my top priority.

What methods do you use to encapsulate?

  • Traditional (Steamed - with or without herbs), Raw Start (Dehydrated without steaming), or Hot Wash (a combination approach that retains more nutrients than steaming, plus a higher energy feel than is imparted with the raw option)

  • We'll discuss and choose the best method for your needs.

When should I book encapsulation services?

  • You can reserve your spot any time during pregnancy. The earlier the better, especially if you’re giving birth in a hospital that has specific release procedures.

How do I store the placenta before pickup?

  • Double bag it in a clean, leak-proof container

  • Place it on ice or in a cooler within 2 hours of birth

  • Keep refrigerated (up to 3 days) or frozen (up to 6 months if needed)

  • Full storage and transport instructions are provided upon booking.

Is there ever a reason you cannot encapsulate a placenta?

Yes. In cases of chorioamnionitis (an infection of the placenta and amniotic fluid), HIV, or Hepatitis B or C, encapsulating poses a health risk and should not be done.

Note that Group B Strep (GBS) and meconium staining are generally safe for encapsulation when proper handling and steaming protocols are followed.

Nutrients and Compounds in the Placenta

  • Iron

    • Supports energy levels and helps prevent postpartum anemia.

  • Prolactin

    • Supports milk production.

  • Protein

    • Essential for tissue repair and overall recovery after childbirth.

  • Progesterone

    • Assists in hormone balance and may reduce mood swings.

  • Vitamin B6

    • Supports mood regulation and brain function.

  • Human Placental Lactogen (hPL)

    • May assist in mammary gland development and milk secretion.

  • Vitamin B12

    • Important for nerve health and energy production.

  • Interferons and Cytokines

    • Involved in immune support and inflammation regulation.

  • Vitamin E

    • An antioxidant that helps with tissue healing and immune support.

  • Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

    • Regulates energy metabolism.

  • Oxytocin (Hormone)

    • Promotes bonding and may help reduce stress and support milk letdown.

  • Estrogen

    • Helps regulate the postpartum hormonal shift.

  • Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone (CRH)

    • Helps manage stress; levels drop sharply after childbirth, so replenishment may help stabilize mood.

The Process

Pick-up

Encapsulation Process

Unless other arrangements have been made, I will personally pick up your placenta at the agreed-upon place and transport it in a dedicated and sterilized cooler with ice packs.

As noted above, there are 3 options for the first stage of preparation. All of them begin with a thorough cleaning of the placenta. From there, we might steam the placenta until it reaches at least 160 degrees, or we might do a hot wash of it, or we might simply do the gentle cool water wash. The placenta is eventually sliced and placed in a sterilized dehydrator, and dehydrated at 165 degrees for 12-24 hours, until the placenta is thoroughly dried. The dried placenta is then pulverized and placed into capsules. The number of capsules varies based on the size of the placenta as well as the preparation method chosen. Steamed placentas typically yield slightly fewer capsules. The average number of capsules yielded is 100-120. The capsules are placed into a sterilized jar and packaged for delivery.

Delivery

Once the capsules are ready, I'll reach out to you to arrange a delivery date and time. If there will be a delay, the capsules will be refrigerated to maintain freshness.
